London Stansted Airport serves scheduled passenger flights and has a railway station linked to the passenger terminal. It can work for a London theatre break when the flight and onward journey fit the performance schedule. Compare the complete transfer and return arrangements before committing to a low air fare.
Travel by train
Stansted Express provides services to London Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale. Those arrival stations offer different onward connections, so choose the one that works for your destination and check the service you intend to use. Other rail operators also serve the airport; their routes and ticket rules differ.
Contactless bank cards and mobile wallets are accepted on Stansted Express, while Oyster cards are not valid for travel to or from Stansted Airport. You can also buy a rail ticket in advance or at the station. Check any restrictions on a purchased ticket, particularly if it is tied to an operator or departure. Do not assume the same payment rules apply to every train serving Stansted.
Arriving and departing
Follow the signed route between the station and the terminal. Lifts, escalators and ramps are available on this connection. Include time for the terminal process after leaving the train: check-in, bag drop, security and the route to the gate are separate stages.
For an arrival, allow for flight delays and baggage collection before selecting a fixed onward departure. Check the first and last services and planned engineering work for your date. If the journey follows a theatre performance, work backwards from the airline's check-in deadline rather than simply checking whether a train exists that evening.
Assistance
Arrange assisted travel through the airline or travel organiser and read the airport's instructions before the day of travel. Stansted provides assistance for departing and arriving passengers; agree where to meet the team and explain any mobility, communication or other access needs.
If the journey includes a train, confirm rail assistance separately. The presence of a lift on the station connection does not establish that every part of the journey or every destination station will meet your requirements.
